Erasmus+ is the largest European Union program for education, training, youth, and sports, which for 35 years has been enriching lives and broadening the horizons of millions of citizens of all generations.

WHY IS THE PROGRAM IMPORTANT?

Originally a student exchange program, it has since grown into a program for all generations, involving numerous organizations: educational institutions, associations, companies, cities, municipalities, and counties, as well as other public and private organizations.

Through a series of project activities, the Erasmus+ program financially supports, educates, empowers, and connects individuals and organizations to achieve their full potential in education, training, youth, and sports. With a total budget of 28.4 billion euros for the period 2021 to 2027, Erasmus+ aims to create equal opportunities for all and sustainable development in line with environmental preservation and keeping pace with digital technologies.

It supports mobility projects and cooperation with domestic and foreign partners to improve education and create a more inclusive society, design innovative solutions to contemporary challenges, and acquire future skills.

ERASMUS+ CHARTER FOR HIGHER EDUCATION?

The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) serves as a general quality framework for European and international cooperation activities that institutions can carry out within the Erasmus+ program.

The awarding of the ECHE is a prerequisite for all higher education institutions located in a program participant country and wishing to participate in individual learning mobility and/or cooperation for innovation and good practices within Erasmus+.

ERASMUS+ FOR PARTICIPANTS WITH FEWER OPPORTUNITIES

The program promotes equal opportunities and access, inclusiveness, diversity, and fairness in all its activities. This particularly applies to organizations and participants with fewer opportunities:

  • Disability: includes physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder an individual's full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.
  • Health issues: barriers may arise from health problems, such as severe or chronic illnesses, or any other physical or mental health-related condition that could prevent participation in the program.
  • Educational and training system-related obstacles: faced by individuals who for various reasons underperform in education and training systems, early school leavers, young people who are not in employment, education, or training (NEET group), and adults with a lower level of skills. Although other factors can influence, these educational difficulties, often arising from structural limitations in the educational system or not fully considering individual needs, can lead to barriers in participation.
  • Cultural differences: while cultural differences can be seen as barriers in any situation, they can particularly affect people with fewer opportunities. These differences can pose significant learning barriers, especially to people of migrant or refugee background, newly arrived migrants, members of national or ethnic minorities, sign language users, persons with language adaptation and cultural integration difficulties, etc. Exposure to foreign languages and cultural differences in program activities can discourage individuals and limit the benefits of their participation. Such cultural differences can even prevent potential participants from applying for program support, representing a complete barrier to inclusion.
  • Social barriers: difficulties in social adaptation, such as limited social skills, antisocial or high-risk behavior, (ex-)offenders, (ex-)drug or alcohol dependents, or social marginalization. Other social barriers may arise from family circumstances, e.g., if a person is the first in their family to attend higher education, a parent (especially a single parent), a caregiver, a breadwinner, an orphan, or lived/lives under institutional care.
  • Economic barriers: arising from unfavourable economic conditions, such as low living standards, low income, students needing to work for self-sustenance, reliance on social welfare systems, long-term unemployment, severe situations or poverty, homelessness, indebtedness, or other financial difficulties. Other difficulties may result from the limited transferability of services (especially support for people with fewer opportunities) that need to be 'mobile' along with participants when going to a distant location or abroad.
  • Discrimination-related barriers: may result from discrimination based on gender, age, ethnic origin, religion, belief, sexual orientation, disability, or intersectional factors (a combination of two or more of the aforementioned discrimination-related barriers).
  • Geographic barriers: living in remote or rural areas, on small islands, or in peripheral/outermost regions, in suburbs, in areas with fewer services (limited public transport, poor infrastructure), or in less developed areas of third countries, etc.

For these categories, there is the possibility of receiving an additional amount of support for mobility.
